A biopsy is to collect a sample of tissue so that the type of tissue can be identified and characterized.
Most often it is to determine if the tissue is some type of cancer, and if it is, what type of cancer. With these answers your doctor can offer you the most appropriate type of treatment.
Biopsies can be performed many ways and are done by many types of doctors. Our IR doctors most often do biopsies with small needles using imaging to guide the procedure. Typically we use either CT scan or ultrasound as the imaging method to guide the placement of the needle.
Sedation? Depending on the location of the spot to be biopsied, along with other factors, we may or may not use sedating medications to help you be more comfortable during the biopsy. If we do your vital signs will be monitored during the biopsy. You might fall asleep with these medications, but we do not put you to sleep... you will be breathing on your own. We often use supplemental oxygen flowing under your nose. The medications we use wear off quickly once we stop giving them.
You will have a band aid after the procedure, no stiches or staples.
